What is a WiFi QR code, exactly?
A WiFi QR code is your network's name, security type and password packed into one scannable square. Phone cameras recognize the format natively: scan it, confirm, connected. Nobody reads your password out loud across the room, and nobody types it wrong three times.
Under the pattern, the code is a short line of text that follows a standard every modern phone understands:

That's the whole trick. The credentials live inside the pattern itself, printed in ink on your wall. There is no link to follow, no page to load, no server in the middle. Which is why the code works in a concrete basement with zero bars, and why it will still work in ten years.
Why bother with one
- The ritual dies. "What's the WiFi?" gets answered by a frame on the shelf instead of by you, twelve times per dinner party.
- Typos die with it. A 20-character password with symbols is great security and terrible dictation. Scanning skips the keyboard entirely.
- It reads as hospitality. A tidy sign at the counter or in the guest room says you thought about the people walking in. A crumpled sticky note says the opposite.
- Your staff gets minutes back. In a cafΓ©, repeating the password is somebody's part-time job. Retire that job.
How to create a WiFi QR code in five steps
- Type your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in the WiFi list, capitals included.
- Pick your security type. WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost everyone; WEP only if your router time-traveled from 2006; "None" for open networks.
- Enter the password, minding the case. The generator preview updates live.
- Make it yours. Colors, a logo in the middle, one of the frames with a "Scan me" call-out, or a ready-made template.
- Download and test. Scan the code with an iPhone and an Android before you print twenty copies. Then print, frame, done.
Your phone can make one too. Here's when that's enough
Fair is fair: your phone already knows how to show a WiFi QR code, and for handing the network to one friend on the couch, it's perfect.
- iPhone (iOS 18 or later): open the Passwords app β Wi-Fi β pick your network β Show Network QR Code. On earlier versions, Settings β Wi-Fi β the β next to your network β Share.
- Android (10 or later): Settings β Wi-Fi / Internet β tap your network (or its gear icon) β Share / QR code. Menu names shift a little between brands, the path doesn't.
So when do you need a generator? The moment the code needs to exist somewhere other than your screen. The phone version is a black-and-white square trapped in your settings menu: you can't put your logo on it, can't print it poster-size for the front desk, can't match it to the wedding stationery, and handing your unlocked phone around the terrace gets old. A generator gives you a file. Files go on menus, key card sleeves, welcome books and fridge magnets, styled the way you want.
How guests actually scan it
The other half of the story, for the people facing your sign:
- iPhone: open the camera, aim, tap the notification, tap Join.
- Android: open the camera or Google Lens, aim, tap the prompt.
- From a screenshot: got sent the code by photo? Google Lens or the iPhone Photos app can read QR codes straight from images.
- Laptops: support is patchier. Keep the password printed in small type under the code for the one person with a ThinkPad, and everyone is covered.
No app to install on either platform. That stopped being a thing years ago.
WPA2, WPA3, WEP or open: pick the right settings
The generator asks one technical question, so here is the honest cheat sheet:
- WPA/WPA2/WPA3 is the right answer for nearly every home and business network built this century. Our generator covers all three, WPA3 included, so a new router won't orphan your sign.
- WEP exists for legacy hardware. If your network really is WEP, the QR code will work, but replacing the router will do more for your security than any password.
- Open network (no password): the QR code still earns its spot. It saves guests from scrolling a list of thirty networks named GUEST, Guest2 and definitely-not-a-honeypot to find yours.
Pick a better password while you're here. Since nobody will type it anymore, length stops hurting. A long passphrase beats a short cryptic one, and your guests will never know the difference: they're scanning.
And give guests their own network. Most routers can broadcast a separate guest SSID that's isolated from your laptops, printers and smart everything. Make the QR code for that network. Rotate its password once a season, regenerate the code, reprint one sheet. Access control for the price of a coffee.
Design and print a sign people actually notice
Here is where most WiFi QR codes go to die: printed at stamp size, black on dark wood, hiding behind the napkin holder. Yours can do better.
Make it look like you.
- Colors and shapes: match the code to your brand or your living room. Five pattern shapes, full color control, and a one-click "Match my brand colours" that pulls a palette from your website.
- A logo in the middle: QR codes tolerate a missing chunk by design (that's error correction doing its job), so your logo sits in the center without breaking a thing.
- Frames that give the order: a border with "Scan me for WiFi" converts better than a naked square, because it answers the only question that matters: what do I get if I scan this?
- Templates: twenty ready-made looks when you'd rather not start from a blank square.
Print it right.
- Size: 2Γ2 cm is the floor for arm's length. For across-the-room scanning, use the distance rule: the code should be about one tenth of the distance. Reading from 2 meters? Print 20 cm.
- Contrast: dark pattern on a light background. Cream on beige looks classy and scans terribly.
- Where it lives matters: laminate the table tents (they will meet a glass of wine), frame the guest room version, and yes, the guest bathroom is a legitimate placement. Captive audience π
- Test first: one scan with each platform before the print run, not after.
For screens, PNG does the job. If a print shop is involved, they'll ask for vector files: create an account and your saved codes export as SVG or EPS, which scale from business card to shop window without a single blurry pixel.
Changed your WiFi password? The honest answer
The credentials are printed inside the pattern, so a new password means a new code. Two minutes: regenerate, reprint the sheet, swap the frame's insert. With an account, your design is saved, so it's the same code in the same style with the new password, not a redesign.
Worth saying plainly, because this SERP is full of wishful thinking: a WiFi QR code that "updates remotely" doesn't really exist. Codes that promise it route your guests through a web page first, which means the scan needs internet before granting internet, and the phone's native "join this network" flow never fires. Ours encodes the network directly. That's also why there is nothing to track: no page loads, no scan counter, by design. Where WiFi QR codes earn their keep
At home. One framed code on the shelf, and dinner guests stop passing your phone around. The in-laws connect without a support call.
Vacation rentals. The first thing every guest does after finding the light switch is ask for the WiFi. A code in the welcome book and another on the fridge answers it at 11 pm without a message. Hosts see it mentioned in reviews, because "checked in, scanned, connected" is the first impression working.
CafΓ©s and restaurants. Table tents and a spot on the menu. Staff stop reciting the password over the espresso machine, and the password itself can finally be long enough to be secure.
Hotels and B&Bs. Key card sleeve, lobby sign, a small frame by the room desk. Multi-property teams: manage every location's codes from one account, one brand look across all of them (that's The Boss tier's home turf).
Offices and coworking. A code at reception for the guest network keeps visitors off the network your accounting lives on. Meeting rooms get their own printed card.
Events and weddings. Match the code to the invitation suite, put it on the welcome sign, and watch photos of the first dance land in the shared album the same night.
The QR won't connect? Run this checklist
Nine times out of ten it's one of these:
- SSID typo. The name must match what the router broadcasts, character for character, capitals included.
- Password case.

- Hidden network. Codes for hidden SSIDs need special handling; see the FAQ below.
- Ancient phone. Native WiFi QR support starts around Android 10 and iOS 11. Older devices need a QR app or the keyboard.
- The code is too small or too gray. Reprint bigger, darker, with more quiet space around it.
- Glare. Glossy lamination plus a spotlight can blind a camera. Tilt the frame or go matte.
- The password changed since printing. It happens to the best of us. Regenerate.
